Guatemala Visits & Communications
The UN Special Rapporteur visited Guatemala from 21 to 25 August 2006. He held a press conference on 24 August 2006, available in English and Spanish, and reported on his visit to the February 2007 session of the UN Human Rights Council. His mission covered impermissible "social cleansing" or the extrajudicial execution of gang members or other undesirables by the Government or private citizens; the unexplained "femicide" or surge in murders of women; lynching; the state's responsibility for prison violence; and impunity for attacks on gay, lesbian and transsexual or transgender individuals. In a 2006 interview with Guatemalan news magazine Siglo XXI, Alejandro Giammattei, director of Guatemala’s prison system, commented on the Special Rapporteur's mission. News on a subsequent agreement reached by the UN and Guatemala to combat impunity is available here. Additional news updates relevant to the Special Rapporteur's mission can be found here, here, and here. The Special Rapporteur also submitted a follow-up report two years later to the Human Rights Council assessing the extent to which his 2007 mission recommendations had been implemented.
